How to Become a Fitness Model

The fitness industry is big business right now, especially on social media. So how can you grab a slice of the action? Read on to find out how to become a fitness model!
What is a Fitness Model?
First, let’s take a look at what a fitness model actually is. A fitness model is a model who has an athletic or muscular physique who works predominantly for brands within the health and fitness industry. This includes gyms, gymwear, meal plans and health/fitness supplements.
There are no specific demands that need to be met in the fitness modelling industry; it depends entirely on what the brand is after. Generally, though, a fitness model needs a good athletic figure, a low-fat body percentage and an attractive face. Height is also an advantage. Body weight is not a factor; brands and modelling agencies will be far more interested in your overall appearance and will not ask for your weight.
A fitness model’s portfolio should contain plenty of athletic or fitness-inspired photos. Close-up face shots should be included as well as full-length body shots.

Do I Need a Certificate in Fitness to Be a Fitness Model?
No! You don’t need to be a qualified nutritionist or personal trainer to be a fitness model (though it can help you to understand the science behind fitness and sports, and enable you to achieve a strong physique that both looks good and is healthy). Technically, it doesn’t matter particularly if you’re very fit – as long as you look the part.
There are lots of different looks in fitness depending on your goal or hobby. Typically, brands like to work with famous sportspeople when catering to a specific sport, so if you have a physique that is excellent at sport but doesn’t look aesthetically “ripped”, you might struggle to find work.
Most fitness models work part-time as models and have other jobs. They may also do other physique-related activities such as physique/bikini competitions. Staying this fit is a very time-consuming and often expensive thing to do, so many people who achieve this look like to try and make the most out of it.
How to Get Started as a Fitness Model
Social media, in particular Instagram and YouTube, have given a great platform to aspiring fitness models. The internet has allowed many more opportunities for work, and often fitness models are themselves approached for collaborations and brand endorsements.
Social media can be very time consuming, but successful people can find themselves earning lots of recognition and money. The more followers, post interactions and views you have, the better.
Try to post lots of photos from your fitness modelling shoots (always ask the permission of the brand/photographer first). If you have yet to do any modelling work, take the photos yourself (either as a selfie or by setting up a camera), or ask a friend or family member to help you out.
Follow other like-minded individuals for inspiration and try to post consistently. Photos should be of an extremely high quality – competition is fierce now as many people are trying to make a living online.
Both female and male fitness models can be successful on social media. The key is to posting high-quality images and videos regularly. Once you have amassed enough followers, brands may approach you for endorsement deals and advertisements. Successful fitness influencers may ever be asked to be a brand ambassador – a great opportunity for regular work and money.
Some fitness models also use YouTube to create content about fitness and health. You will have to know how to film and edit videos for this, and it’s very time consuming and difficult to build followers, but it can be a really great way to get fans and social media attention.
Some fitness models and “influencers” who have done well online have also gone on to make money by creating successful fitness apps or training programs. Fitness models can become influential people, and this opens up a lot of doors.
The more followers you get, the more influence you have. This can be both good and bad. While it will provide you with plenty of business opportunities, you will also have a responsibility online to share only safe, healthy advice. You will also have to combat the expected negativity that comes with being an online presence; some people really struggle with this, so it’s important you take care of your mental health.
